We had a terrible storm last night with MORE rain! Today something happened that hadn't happened in this area since 1973 or so. The Norfork Dam had opened the floodgates because there was too much water. We drove over this afternoon to view the sight and so did thousands of other people! It was something that we had never seen before and we have lived here almost 23 years now.
If you look in this picture and see the little white square-looking things in the water.....well, that it the top of picnic areas. They are all underwater. We went down to where people had built some VERY NICE homes and the police were there telling everyone they needed to pack up and evacuate because the river is rising tonight and their homes will probably be flooded by tomorrow! Very sad!
To see the force of the water coming out of the dam was awesome. There was a cloud of water coming up when the water hit the river. It was a dramatic sight! Now the weatherman is saying it will turn cold again tomorrow and may even have a little "SNOW"!!!!! What on earth????
Please remember to pray for the many people who have lost their homes during the storms. And pray for a little sunshine to come our way! But we thank God for the storms of life knowing He is molding us for His glory!

Wow! I wanted to drive over to see this today, but after the drive up yesterday, I hated to make the kids sit in the car again. Your pictures are really neat--what a view. How sad about those homes though.
All this rain and the floods have been awful. Fort Smith got hit hard last night - they had to close schools. They had huge hail that blew out windows and put huge holes in roofs. I'm so thankful that we haven't had any issues. I'm glad there is a forecast of 10 sunny days ahead - we need it.

I heard that there were some bad storms in that area...my sis lives outside of Fort Smith, and said they had softball sized hail. Yikes!
I learned to ski on Lake Norfork, and have such great memories playing on that lake. In fact, I learned to water ski there. I know that must have been a neat thing to see today.
I hope you don't get snow. We got about 7 inches today...and that is 7 inches too many for me. But I'll take snow over tornadoes any day!
We went over the river today and saw the dam was open there, too. I don't think I have ever seen it open before. Quite a sight! I feel so sorry for all those people that may lose their homes. I can't imagine what they must be feeling.

If you saw a big, white, Dodge truck, we just missed each other. Austin wasn't as impressed with the sight as I, but someday he will be able to say, "...way back in '08, when I was only 11, we had a flood so big they opened all 12 floodgates on Norfork Dam...."
I heard Bull Shoals Dam was opening all 17 floodgates today (Saturday). I'm sure I'll have to make that trek, too. Mom said she remembered the flood gates open there when Papa Hopper ran the boat dock just below the dam, she was still in high school. (..which wasn't all that long ago...just in case Mom happens to read this)
It was really neat to be able to see the flood gates open at Norfork!! We also went to Bull Shoals on Saturday and seen them, too!! Having lived on the lake and river my whole life, I have never seen something like that!!
I've been wondering how the river and damn were doing with all this rain. Bryan will find this very interesting. He is a civil engineer and his main focus is in flood/drainage, etc.
