Summertime Fun: VBS at Saddle Ridge Ranch

You know summer has arrived when it's time again for Vacation Bible School!

To this very day, when I smell Kool-Aid, I think of my childhood VBS days!

I remember, as almost yesterday, gluing macaroni on cigar boxes(yes, real cigar boxes), painting them and taking them home to Mother for a "jewelry box".

We had no "themes" like today or videos......probably flannel-board Bible stories were the most exciting visual we were ever exposed to!  But we did learn many Bible stories that we remember even today!

But I do remember marching into the church to the tune of "Onward Christian Soldiers" and pledging allegiance to the American flag, Christian flag and the Salute to the Bible.  "Thy Word Have I Hid in my Heart that I might not sin against Thee"!!

Do you remember the "Sit-down" and "Stand-Up" Chords on the piano??

Ok, enough reminiscing about the dark ages (you tend to do that when you get old)!  Let's get on to Today's VBS!

There the decorations........

There's crafts.............

Then there's my favorite..........................Snacks (Kool-Aid and homemade cookies!!)............

We all love the music ...................it is great...................

And, of course, the most important part of Vacation Bible School...............the Kids!!
In my class we were expecting maybe 15 and we had 28!  Our cup overflowed!!

And this is just the first day........................Can't wait till tomorrow!

Our pastor always says the "broken" cookies are meant for him...wonderful memories. You know, we should bring flannel boards back. The kids would love being able to position the Bible characters. We may be mature, but kids are still kids and they love to interact.

The first year Kale went to VBS (it would've been my first VBS too) - which was probably 1990 when we first joined the church... they did the stand up/sit down chords. I had forgot all about that!!!

I SO hope to get away from my desk a little more tomorrow to see what the kids are doing! I enjoyed seeing the photos!!

Yes, VBS has changed a LOT over the years. I started working in our VBS about 3 years ago; it had been probably 12 years or so since I had last worked. I was AMAZED at all the stuff they had, and how much easier some of it was. No more having to figure it all out from scratch! We're doing Saddle Ridge Ranch this week too. We started Sunday night, so we've got two behind us. We have to do ours at night in order to have enough workers. I am the director this year, for the first time. It is so much work, but so much fun! Will try to post some pics on my blog soon.

Just something special about VBS :)

Marc came home today and started asking me about your church in Flippin. He asked if ya'll were having VBS this week and I said yes. He then told me that our good friends son headed up there to Flippin. He met a little girl while at centrifuge (not sure on that spelling)and is going to spend a few days with her and her parents. She said her Uncle was the pastor of a church there and they will be having VBS this week. I thought this just may be ya'll. So if you have a niece that has a sweet little boy named Blake visiting that would be our best friends son.If so it is such a small small world. I told Marc I'm sure flippin has many churches and many of those are in VBS this week but there just may be a chance. We hope to visit as well one day. I would love to know if this is your niece...If so I will make sure to tell my friend that her sweet boy is in a wonderful hands. Take care Mrs. Judy and have fun at VBS
(((hugs ))) Susie~

I miss those VBS days. That was the highlight of my summer growing up. The backdrops, crafts, and all decorations look amazing. I know the kids are having a wonderful time and learning lots about Jesus.

Thank you for your sweet post on my blog. As you are well aware, you have raised one awesome daughter in your Kelly- you must be so proud :-)
I have great memories of VBS...it is where I really fell in love with Jesus. I didn't grow up going to church with my family, but I often went to VBS with friends to their church. It was great!
Looks like y'all are having a great time this week!

I found your blog through your daughter's blog and am much closer to your age than hers :). I can relate to your VBS memories from years past and can still hear the stand-up and sit-down chords if I think about it. One thing that is timeless is the way kids love to hear about Jesus.

Wow that's a lot of kids. This is nothing like we had when I went to VBS. ha! Mine was a lot more like yours. There was no theme either. We sang lots of songs, and did crafts and we learned Bible verses. I loved it!!
